Vi is a sweet, hardworking young girl despite the hardships she faces. Born a deaf-mute, Vi also has weakness in one leg and often feels sick or fatigued. Every week her grandmother sends her to school and she goes home on the weekends with her parents. Even though Vi's understanding of her lessons happens more slowly than her classmates, she tries to do her best. Her favorite subject is sign language. She says that she likes this class the best because, "It helps [her] understand others." Vi is not confident in her ability to learn her lessons, so she often copies the exercises of her fellow students. "I don't do outstanding in other subjects, but I am good, obedient, hard-working girl."
